The English Catholic History Association seeks to encourage interest in the Catholic history of England and Wales. We aim to assist in preventing the destruction of material relating to Catholic history and have set up our own archive library.
The Association also aims to provide a support system for researchers. The Association developed from the English Catholic History Group that was formed in 1991. At our 1997 Annual General Meeting a new constitution was agreed with a view to obtaining Charitable status. This changed the title to 'English Catholic History Association'. After a slight modification to the constitution Charitable Status was granted in November 1998.
Throughout the year we hold meetings, at various venues, with eminent speakers. We also organise visits to places of Catholic interest. Our biennial Conferences have been held at St Mary's College, Strawberry Hill, Middlesex; St Gildas Christian Centre, Langport, Somerset; St Joseph's, Upholland, Lancashire; Belmont Abbey, Hereford, Ampleforth, N. Yorkshire, Torquay, Devon, and Ushaw Durham. Our 2006 three day Conference was held at Canterbury and in 2008 we were at Llandudno. Our next conference is scheduled for 2010 in Leeds.
The A.G.M. is usually held during a day Conference at Downside Abbey, near Bath, in October. The venue may be changed to alternative locations. Quarterly newsletters provide a facility for publication of short articles by members, in addition to circulating Association information.
Regional co-ordinators have been appointed, in some areas, to arrange regular meetings and activities in their localities.
The Patrons of the Association are The Rt. Rev. Mervyn Alexander, D.D. Emeritus Bishop of Clifton and Lord Clifford of Chudleigh.
The President of the Association is Dom Aidan Bellenger, Abbot of Downside, OSB, MA, PhD, FSA, F.R. Hist.S, FRSA.
Membership of the Association is open to all who are interested in furthering its aims and objectives on payment of a joining fee of £3.00 and the annual subscription of £8.00. A reduced subscription is available to additional members living at the same address who share newsletters and other correspondence. Student members under 25 years of age may join for an annual fee of £4. An additional charge may be made to overseas members for postage. The Annual subscription is due on the 1st January each year.
